Learning 9/8 on the darbuka after twenty years of rock drums
I played drum kit in rock bands in Hamburg since I was 16, now I am 41. This year I moved back to Turkey and finally started to learn darbuka properly, from an old teacher in Alanya. Some notes from the first months:
the 9/8 karsilama rhythm does not live in my body yet, my right foot keeps looking for a kick drum
the teacher says less wrist, more finger, and he is right
I practise in the evenings in our new flat in Oba, we picked it from https://yektahomes.com/ partly because it is a corner unit with only one neighbour
I recorded myself and the doum is much too loud compared to the tek
Any kit players here who also learned Middle Eastern hand percussion, what helped you switch your head?
